Dear friends,

On September 2nd 1945, people all over Viet Nam celebrated the country’s independence after many years of struggle. In the following 75 years, the Vietnamese people have made great efforts in the cause of national construction and development, and I am proud to say that, from a war-torn country, now people are talking more about Vietnam’s economic and social achievements, as well as its position in the world’s political map.

The country has seen strong economic growth in 2019 with a GDP growth rate of 7%, the highest in Southeast Asia. In 2020, regardless of the impacts of the Covid-19 pandemic, Viet Nam is forecast to become one of the fastest growing economies in Southeast Asia. Vietnam was elected as a non-permanent Member of the United Nations Security Council for the term 2020-2021. Vietnam is the chair of ASEAN for the year 2020. The EU-Vietnam Free Trade Agreement signed in June 2019, has become effective from August 2020. This agreement will open new windows of opportunities in trade and investment for Vietnam and EU countries. Vietnam’s aim is to become a good friend and reliable partner of all countries and an active member of the world community.

Like many Vietnamese people, I understand that Vietnam couldn’t have made those achievements without the valuable support and assistance from our Greek friends and friends from other countries. I would like to take this opportunity to extend to all of you my sincere gratitude for your support to Vietnam, to the Embassy and to me personally, for the development of friendship and cooperation between Vietnam and countries of the world.

This year also marks the 45th Anniversary of the Establishment of the Vietnam-Greece diplomatic relationship. Although the pandemic has made us temporarily postpone activities already planned to celebrate this Anniversary, I hope that when the situation gets better, we will be able to resume our plans and our joint initiatives to commemorate this special year.

In a rapidly changing world today, Vietnam, like all other countries, is having great opportunities, but also facing big challenges. The Covid-19 pandemic is leaving negative effects on global growth and development. Nevertheless, I believe that by together joining hands, we will be able to overcome difficulties to head towards a brighter future and to further upgrade the friendly relationship between us.

My best wishes to all of you for your safety, good health and happiness.

Manh Cuong NGUYEN
Ambassador of Vietnam to the Hellenic Republic
