Marking the 1st World Bee Day in Greece – 14th-20th May 2018

After over 3 years of efforts at the international level and following the Slovenian proposal, the United Nations last year declared 20 May as World Bee Day. The purpose of the initiative is to raise awareness of the importance of bees, beekeeping and other pollinators and their role in food security and sustainable development. Beekeeping is of great importance for agriculture and other sectors like environment, the economy and others. One third of food produced in the world depends on pollination and bees play the most important role among the pollinators.

This act is not only an exceptional acknowledgement for Slovenia but a joint step towards the elimination of hunger and poverty, and environmental conservation. The initiative was adopted with co-sponsorship of 115 countries, including Greece.

Therefore the Embassy of the Republic of Slovenia in Greece in partnership with the Greek company APIVITA launched a series of events in the week between 14 and 20 May to mark the first World Bee Day.

We hope the events will help raise awareness of the importance of bees and that we are all united in the care and protection for bees and other pollinators on which our lives depend. We hope that this will become an important tradition with which we will step up the necessary efforts for their preservation and thus contribute to a more sustainable agriculture and global food security.
